Architecture is art with a practical use to it.  Designing for people is what inspires Todd Schooler, Architect and Owner of Todd Schooler & Associates and Partner in Carney/Schooler Builders.  “I design for people,” says Schooler.  “I enjoy designing interesting spaces to fit people’s wants and needs.  Clients have their own, individual desires, and I strive to creatively fit their needs and desires to their personal space.  Architecture is art with a practical use to it.  We solve problems and design to a client’s desires.”

What is in your perfect world?  Schooler’s first step in any project is to determine what a client’s idea of perfection is and then try to achieve that.  “I don’t want my clients to limit themselves on what they think they can’t have,” says Schooler.  “I encourage my clients to not think about what they can’t have, and I ask the right questions to get them to tell me what they really want.  My first question to clients is, what do you want in a perfect world?  Everyone has the answers inside of them,” says Schooler.  “Some of us just don’t know it.”

Todd Schooler is most well-known for his unique designs in the upscale beach areas of Southern California and Hawaii that include residential, commercial, remodel and new construction projects.  He has designed the largest home in Yorba Linda, California, currently under construction, for John Force, Thirteen Time World Funny Car Racing Champion and recently completed a definitive 3,600 square foot home in Laguna Beach perched on an oceanfront bluff.  Schooler is also a primary catalyst in the largest residential project in West Newport Beach history, Seashore Village, a project requiring extensive knowledge of the city’s zoning codes.  No job, though, is ever too large or too small for Todd Schooler and his partner, Craig Carney.

Schooler’s knowledge of zoning codes and how municipalities operate is defining and sets him apart from other architects.  “No one can get through any department or municipality better than I can, even in a city I’ve never worked in,” says, Schooler.  “I take time to research the reasons behind the codes and ask the questions to get the answers toward understanding how things work.  This lets me push the limits of what’s allowed better than anyone, and my record shows it.  I am undefeated in the past twenty-five years.”  Schooler, as a partner in Carney/Schooler Builders, also understands how things are put together and what the costs of doing a project are.  “This sets me apart from every architect out there,” says Schooler.  “Most architects don’t have the advantage of having their own construction company.  My partnership in Carney/Schooler Builders offers my clients more options and a one-stop shop feel.”

Schooler says he started drawing and designing very early in life and took drafting classes in high school, never questioning that he would be a prominent architect.  “You are born to be an architect.  You have to love it to be successful.”

In 1982, Schooler opened Todd Schooler & Associates, his own architectural firm, in his two bedroom apartment in Newport Beach, California.  He says he had reached the pinnacle of what he wanted to achieve working for someone else and knew he wanted the opportunity to do things his way and create, into reality, his ideas and designs.

What would you like to be remembered for?
“My integrity,” says Schooler.   “I always try to treat people the way I would expect to be treated.  If everyone did that, there’d be more happy people in the world.”

Schooler is an avid bicyclist, raced for 23 years, and currently rides 250 miles a week for pleasure.
